Livingstone wins Hwy. 52 Shootout Title over Pfeiffer

The Pfeiffer men's basketball team led by as much as seven in the first half and rallied from a 15-point deficit in the second half, but Livingstone's Nasir Austin led the Blue Bears to the Hwy. 52 Shootout Title on Saturday evening at Livingston College.

Austin finished with 22 points, including an emphatic dunk with just under a minute left in the game to secure the win for the Blue Bears.

Danny Smith led Pfeiffer (1-1) with 20 points, 15 of which coming in the second half.

The taller Blue Bears outrebounded the Falcons 37-27 in the game and edged Pfeiffer in shooting percentage 47 to 43 to win the title of the third-annual pre-season tournament.

A full story and pics will appear in the Tuesday print edition.

One last post!

Pfeiffer trails Duke 104-26 with 3:51 left in the game.

This will be my last post from the game. A short story on the game will appear on our website, www.thesnaponline.com, a few minutes after tonight's ball game.

Thanks for watching the blog tonight! For updates, columns, musing, late-breaking sports info or more, please check out my blog for updates, as well as our website!

Shelley Reese

With all the huge Duke players out there, who gets a rebound among all the tall trees? Pfeiffer guard Shelley Reese, all 5'1" of her.

The Devils are about to break the century mark, leading 98-23 with 6:50 left in the game. Pfeiffer is just 2-of-15 in the second half and 8-for-38 overall in the game.

Duke posts another long run

After Carlisha Holivay's bucket for Pfeiffer at the 15:25 mark of the secon half, the Blue Devils have gone on an 18-0 run and lead 85-21 with 10:56 left in the second half.

Duke opens second half on fire

The Duke women jumped out to a 10-0 run to start the second half and lead 65-19, mostly on steals and transition offense. Of Duke's 65 points, 48 of them have come off of points in the paint, both layups in transition and the overwhelming size of the Devils' frontcourt.

First Half Ends

As they have all game long so far, the Duke Blue Devils women's squad scores in the paint as the buzzer sounds...53-16 Devils lead Pfeiffer at halftime. Halftime stats coming soon!

What a move!

Brittany Cox breaks through with a reverse-layup with four minutes left in the first half...a beautiful move! Duke calls a :30 timeout with 3:55 left in the first half leading 41-14.

Jodie Lemons hits again!

Pfeiffer freshman Jodie Lemons, who played her high school ball at North Stokes High School in Madison, NC, hit another three-pointer and has nine of the Falcons' 10 points. She is 3-of-4 from the field; the rest of the team is 0-for-10 so far.

Duke leads 33-10 with 7:34 left in the first half.

Duke extends lead to 21-6

Kellie Rohney got the Duke fans oohing and aahing with a killer crossover on Shay Selby, I think, but she didn't score.

Pfeiffer is just 2-of-8 from the field right now and has committed eight turnovers.

Duke is not shooting well from the field (8-of-18) but has six offensive rebounds and leads 21-26 with just over 11 minutes left inthe first half.

Duke leads 15-6 after four minutes

Pfeiffer three-pointer#33 Jodie Lemons, 16:40 left first half, 12-3 Duke

15:59, #33 Jodie Lemons ,3 pointer, 15-6 Duke.

Jodie Lemons has all 6 of Pfeiffer's points so far...media timeout with 15:12 left in the first half, it's Duke ball, leading 15-6.

Pfeiffer - Duke 1st Half

8-0 duke run to start the game, four points for Chloe Wells, Pfeiffer calls a :30 timeout with 17:39 left in the first half.

Live from Press Row

Amazing to be sitting on press row at Cameron Indoor Stadium with 10 minutes to opening tip, with the stands far less than full, and it still feels hot as the dickens in here!

Duke has a huge size advantage over Pfeiffer, with several players well over six feet tall.

The Blue Devil mascot has the message "No Fly Zone" on his forehead...lol!

Game time!

Live at Cameron

I am sitting courtside on press row at Cameron Indoor Stadium with 37 minutes till tip off between the Pfeiffer women's basketball team and the Duke Blue Devils.

I will be sending updates all night...check back often!

South Stanly to honor Austin Burleson, Hunter Mauldin before varsity game Friday

I just learned a few minutes ago that at 7:15 tonight before the South Stanly varsity football game, there will be a special ceremony honoring the memories of Austin Burleson and Hunter Mauldin.

I didn't know the two students that died in the car crash Wednesday, but Hunter Mauldin's mother and grandparents have both worked as newspaper deliverers for the Stanly News and Press. In fact, Lynn and Trudy Maske continue to deliver the paper, and delivered yesterday's edition, which included a story on the death of their grandson. Just the thought of having to deliver that kind of news hitting so close to home for them is so very sad.

Tonight will be a much different atmosphere as it is the first South Stanly athletic activity since the tragedy occurred, and it is likely that the tone of things will be different.

Sports has a way of uniting communities, and having gone to high school in a small community in Hayesville, I remember how a group of young women rallied the support of hundreds in the chase of state championship glory.

In the case of South Stanly, the community's support for the baseball team in their playoff runs in 2009 and this past spring show how important the school is to the community.

Tonight won't be easy for any of us.

Random Thoughts on a Friday afternoon

As I get ready to head down to Unionville to cover the West Stanly - Piedmont football game tonight, here are some random thoughts for the day!
- I saw on Twitter where former Baltimore Raven Orlando Brown passed away today at the age of 40. Brown was the player infamous for shoving referee Kirk Triplette down to the ground after Triplette threw a flag that hit Brown in the eye.
Brown later sued the NFL, claiming that the incident shortened his NFL career because of temporary blindness, later settling for somewhere between $15 to $20 million.
That was one of the odder incidents in the history of live sports, but people fail to realize how dangerous things really are on the fields and race tracks.
I saw a report on Insider Edition about the recent deaths at a Reno air show, and saw a four-year old child on the sidelines of a college football game get run over.
As someone that has cheated serious injury (knock on wood) while walking sidelines for over six years now as a sports editor, just let me say that if you are on the sidelines or in the stands of a football game or other events, please keep your eyes on the action when the action is in progress. The life you save may be your own or your family's life as well.
- If Friday's Albemarle - West Montgomery game wasn't big enough already, it is much bigger now thanks to the cancellation to Monday night.
With all the military events rescheduled for Monday as well, more football fans will likely be at the game for this one, as well as those following other schools getting a chance to see a rare Stanly County Monday Night Football game on Monday night (we will be taping for television and it will air later in the week, not sure when yet).
I'm excited to see Jaquil Capel in action for West Montgomery. I understand through the grapevine that there are a number of Div. I schools recruting him, including Georgia Tech.
The game could really make a big impact for the standings of the Yadkin Valley Conference, as well as be one of the most entertaining games of the season.
- It's also hard to believe that the Stanly County Panthers have reached the end of their first regular season. It's been a long trip in mostly overly hot weather for a group of men that have fought adversity all season long to be within one victory of a plus-.500 record for their first season ever.
The Panthers' final home game is on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. at North Stanly High School and I know that the players and staff would love to see a big crowd that night.
Stanly will make the playoffs and has a good chance of hosting a home playoff game. In the Central Carolina Football League, the top four teams get a bye in the first week, and the next four (I believe) would get home game

Random Thoughts on the Panthers

Here are two items that should concern Panther fans from Sunday's home game:

- I read in the Charlotte Observer where Steve Smith was seen yelling at a fan in the third quarter after fumbling the football.
Though Smith probably should not be even giving the fans any notice during the game, the problem is the way he was carrying the football as he was going out of bounds: with one hand.
I know that I have never played the game, and I admit that my experience in the game comes from just general observations, but if you have two guys on you and you already have the first down, ball security has to come first. The extra couple of yards he would have gotten with a stretched-out hand were not as important as possession.
Besides, the only time that a player should try that move with one hand is to get a first down or at the goalline; it's a uncharacteristic sloppy play from a veteran wide receiver that the Panthers desperately need to make big plays.
- While still on the Panthers' game from Sunday, here is another odd choice, this one by the offensive braintrust.
It's third down and one for Carolina from the Packer three-yard line with about four minutes left in the game, and instead of just running the football to get the first down, the Panthers ran a rollout passing play in which Cam Newton lost three yards on the sack.
I know that Carolina had not run well Sunday, but if you can't get one yard on a play, then something needs to change in the running game.
If you get the first down without the touchdown, you might be able to run a little more clock with a couple of short runs or force the Packers to call timeouts.
It's a moot point now, but at the time, it could have made a huge difference.

Cameron Sabol

I talked about this in my column Sunday but I thought it deserved to be on my blog as well, so here are my comments about Cam Sabol from Sunday's paper!

- Rarely have I seen as determined an effort from one individual in a team sport as Cam Sabol had against South Stanly.
In the media, we like to single out players with big numbers because stats are unrefutable for the most part and it’s easy to include in articles.
Sabol’s offensive line, along with running back Anthony Long, deserve a lot of credit for giving Sabol room to run.
However, Sabol’s 54-yard scramble late in the first quarter was an amazing play (see the picture page for a glimpse of it).
Sabol was caught by the Bulls defense and knocked down, but the Comet senior kept his knees off the ground and broke free in one of the most amazing plays I’ve seen in 11 years of broadcasting.
Credit for North’s win goes to the entire team, of course, with Long’s kickoff return and Johnny Little’s fumble return.
But if you see Cam this week in the halls at North, shake his hand; he gave his all for North on Friday.

Slappy's Revenge and Other Thoughts

If there are any minor mistakes in the paper this past Sunday, cut me a little slack.
Anyone that was at the North game Friday night that had any plans on Saturday were probably as half-asleep as I was writing my column in the paper.
Here are two excerpts from it: the full column is online at www.thesnaponline.com!

- One of the SNAP’s newest sports correspondents, Brooke Whitley, wanted to pass along some great news that was announced at the West game last night.
Quan Sturdivant has made the cut for the Arizona Cardinals and will be on the 53-man roster when the Cards host the Carolina Panthers next Sunday.
I have known Quan through his exploits on the West Stanly athletic fields over the years; he is a good young man and will be a great example for Stanly County in the professional sports ranks.
- The Albemarle Disc Golf Association is holding their annual major championship this coming Saturday at Fox Chase Golf Course in Albemarle, located at Chuck Morehead Park.
It’s called “Slappy’s Revenge,” which is an ode to this certain sound that you hear while playing the game, more so if you are not good at it, like me.
When a thrown disc hits a tree, it makes this “thwack” sound like someone being slapped, hence the name of it.
There are various divisions at the tournament, including a pro division.
I understand that Cameron Todd, a pro disc golfer that earned a world championship in 2001, has registered to play in the tournament.
The ADGA has regular club tournaments on the second Saturday of every month, including the Ice Bowl charity event in the winter months.

Pfeiffer Women's Basketball team to play exhibition game at Duke

I finally have confirmation from Pfeiffer that the women's basketball team will be playing an exhibition game at Cameron Indoor Stadium on November 3 at 7 p.m.!

This marks the second time in three years that a Pfeiffer basketball team will be playing an exhibition game at Duke.

The Falcons men's squad played at Duke in October of 2009, losing 128-70 to the Blue Devils.

Head coach Jill Thomas will be starting her third full season with Pfeiffer, having led the team to a 14-13 record last year, the Falcons' first season with a record over .500 since the 2006-07 campaign.

Duke finished 32-4 last year, winning their second straight ACC championship under head coach Joanne P. McCallie, along with reaching the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament. Published reports are that the Blue Devils will bring to Cameron this season a recruiting class that is ranked #1 in the country.

I will have more information on the game, including tickets and such, as we get closer to the season.

I have watched games at all the major college venues in North Carolina, and Cameron ranks among the best experience for a fan. You have to love the Dukies' enthusiasm for the game...they showed great respect to Pfeiffer in 2009, asking me questions before the game all about the school, the team, etc.

I will be making my plans to be in Durham in November!

Stanly County Panthers destroy Thomasville 56-12

On a beautiful, overcast night in downtown Albemarle, Webb Field saw the renewal of a long-standing high school gridiron rivalry in the semi-pro ranks of the Central Carolina Football League when the Thomasville Titans visited the Stanly County Panthers.

For many of the team's members that played at Albemarle, it was another chance to earn a football victory against familiar opponents in the long-standing rivalry between the two high schools.

This round in the semi-pro ranks went to the Stanly County Panthers convincingly with a 56-12 win over Thomasville.

The game featured the return to the football field of former Albemarle and N.C. State standout T.A. McLendon, who rushed for three touchdowns Saturday.

An Amazing Story of Overcoming Obstacles

I was just sent a link to this amazing story about a golfer who was headed to Pfeiffer University this past fall but suffered immeasureable tragedy, yet has bounced back and will be playing in a tournament this weekend.

Here is the link to this touching story from the Star Phoenix in Saskatoon, Saskatchwan.

Bottom 7

2) Connor singled to left field (Blackmon in to pitch)
3) Barnes bunts the runners over
4) Jenkins, on a suicide squeeze, lines out to third base; Lisk to Wallace to double up the runner.

Game Over...South Wins 3-1!!!!

3) Lisk flied out to the catcher on a two-strike bunt attempt
4) Wallace flied out to shortstop in short left field
5) Fraley singled to left field; Ford scored!
6) Starnes ground out to first base.

South gets an insurance run, leads 3-1...Weiker takes the mound in the 7th!

Bottom 6

1) Bowen doubles, advanced to third on a wild throw from right field
2) Wilkinson flies out to second base
3) Freeman called out on strikes
4) Bracey grounded out to first base.

East tried a suicide squeeze but the bunt attempt by Wilkinson went to the screen.

The Gators tried again and South pitched out, nearly getting Bowen out. On the second squeeze attempt, Freeman bunted it foul down first-base line.

Still 2-1.
Still South leads.

Seventh Inning to come next!

Top 6

1) Starnes flies out to second base
2) Short singles to right field (first south hit of the game); stole second base with two outs
3) Blackmon flies out to first base in foul ground (made the play on top of the pitching mound in the bullpen)
4) Weiker lines out to second base

South leads 2-1 going to the bottom of the sixth

Bottom 5

1) Connor grounds out to short (throw was high, Fraley jumped, caught the ball and tagged the runner)
2) Barnes hits a long fly ball that hits a sign just below the scoreboard...a long discussion of whether or not it was a home run...ruled a triple
3) Jenkins strikes out swinging
4) Bridgers grounds out to first

This may be the oddest baseball game I've ever seen in my life! Illegal bats, umpires not sure of whether or not time was called, triples that might could be home runs...controversy, angst, pressure...and that's just up here in the press box!

Top 5

1) Lisk strikes out looking
2) Wallace strikes out swinging
3) Fraley strikes out swinging

Seven straight outs recorded by Bowen (five of them strikeouts).

South continues to lead 2-1 despite having no hits in the game having scored those two unearned runs in the third inning.

Bot 4

1) Wilkinson (reenters) grounded out to the pitcher
2) Freeman strikes out swinging
3) Bracey doubled down the left-field line

3) Poplin strikes out swinging (the second striked looked awfully low)

2-1 South Stanly heading to the bottom of the fourth

Bot 3

1) Smith doubles to right field
2) Connor grounds out to second base; Smith to third
3) Barnes called out on strikes (high pitch)
4) Jenkins RBI single, scoring relief runner Wayne from 3rd
5) Bridgers singled to the hole between short and third (Wallace made a play on it but his throw was late)
6) Bowen grounded to short, Wallace at short bobbled the ball, Jenkins tried to score from third and was thrown out!

East tried to bring in a courtesy runner, but then time had appeared to have been called. A long discussion ensued with Coach Tucker. I have video running on the play and I will check on in later tonight!

What a long inning of drama and controversy!

Top 3

1) Poplin walks; reached second on a wild pitch with two outs; scores on a throwing error by the East catcher (went over first base and into the bullpen on the first-base side)
2) Lisk out on illegal bat
3) Wallace flies out to center
4) Fraley walks; advances to third on the catcher's error
5) Starnes reaches on an error by the shortstop; Fraley scores
6) Short reaches on an error by the first baseman (ground ball to second, throw dropped); Starnes to second
7) Blackmon strikes out swinging

South scores two runs on no hits with three errors and two left on...lead 2-0 top 3!

There was some discussion after Lisk's at-bat regarding whether or not he was using a legal bat. The umpires pulled out their list and the bat was deemed illegal. Lisk is out and Poplin went back to first base

Bottom 2nd

1) Bridgers grounds to first, but beats Weiker to the bag, safe (caught stealing at second for the second out)
2) Bowen flies out to shortstop
3) Wilkinson singles to right field (Andres brought in as a pinch runner)

Bowen seems to be having some control issues but is still keeping South a little off-balance right now.

Bot 1st

1) Bracey singles to left field (thrown out at second base for the second out - CS)
2) Smith strikes out swinging
3) Connor hit by a pitch

South Stanly Baseball advances to 1A state title game with win at Murphy

After having made the five-hour trip up to Murphy tonight to see South Stanly's 19-8 win over Murphy in Game Three of the NCSHAA 1A regional finals, one word can describe the experience: exhausting.

And if I am sitting here at my computer gasping for breath, imagine what the Bulls' players had to endure through seven innings of baseball today with the temperature gauge starting at 91 degrees at the game's 5 p.m. start time.

You have to be dedicated to your schools and to the game of baseball to play under these condititions, which is certainly true of South Stanly and Murphy.

In speaking to the Bulldogs and their fans on Saturday and up here in the mountains today, I heard at least three or four times what a class act and what good and worthy opponents South Stanly was for their team and their boys.

I wanted to thank all of the Murphy fans that were so kind to my wife and I today...it's not always being the reporter covering the visiting team at a state playoff game, but Laura and I felt welcome and appreciated.

For more details of today's game, a full story will be in Tuesday's print edition and online at www.thesnaponline.com later Tuesday!

So, Rebel Bull Nation...make your plans to be in Raleigh as soon as possible! South goes for their second state title in three years against the 21-4 East Columbus Gators on Friday! I'll have further details on the game in the paper and on Facebook, Twitter and this blog as soon as I can!!!

South Stanly baseball evens regional series with Murphy

The South Stanly Rebel Bulls exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a 5-2 win over Murphy in Game Two of the 1A West Regional finals Saturday night at South Stanly.

Russ Weiker earned the win on the mound for South, going the complete game for the Bulls and giving up two earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts.

Taylor Cardell took the loss for the Bulldogs, throwing five innings of one-hit shutout ball for Murphy.

For the first five innings, the two teams combined for only three hits as both pitchers kept hitters off balance.

Michael Kornea gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI double, scoring Justin Coker.

In the top of the sixth, Murphy got back-to-back doubles from Brooklyn McKeon and Josh Cook to lead 2-0.

South rallied in the bottom of that frame for five runs on five hits, including RBIs from Landon Fraley, Jordan Starnes and Grayson Short, along with a two-RBI double from Weiker.

Game Three of the 1A West Regional Series is Monday at Murphy. Game time is tenatively scheduled for 5 p.m. but may be moved up to 4 p.m.

Check this blog for more information on Monday's game, along with Facebook and Twitter as well!

Stanly County Schools athletic programs each to receive $1,000 dollars returned from NCHSAA

Interesting stuff coming from the NCHSAA today...

CHAPEL HILL-- The North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors completed its spring Board meeting on Wednesday at the NCHSAA offices.

Among the major items was the decision to return additional monies to the NCHSAA member schools, to preserve the Student Services program and a change in the preseason conditioning requirements for football.

The Board voted to make a one-time payment of one thousand dollars to each member school for the 2010-11 academic year to assist schools in these challenging economic times. The Board also voted that for the next four years, 25% of the dollar surcharge on tickets designed to go to the NCHSAA Endowment will be directed to the member schools. Other changes the Board had made at earlier Board meetings in terms of percentages of money kept for playoffs and travel reiumbursement has meant that an additional $125,000 has been sent to the member schools.

The Board also approved an projected adjusted budget for the NCHSAA Student Services program that the Association will absorb if the current funding that has come from the General Assembly is not continued for next year.

Specific changes were made in preseason football conditioning guidelines, based on National Athletic Trainers Association guidelines, that limit time on the field and three "cool hours" must separate multiple practices or a practice and a walk-through in a single day. The entire policy will be distributed to the NCHSAA membership and posted on line.

"The Board had a very productive meeting over the past two days, highlighted by the fact that the NCHSAA is doing all that is possible to help the membership in these tough economic times," said Davis Whitfield, commissioner. "In addition, to approve the funding of our student-services program because of the wonderful programming it provides related to integrity, teamwork, sportsmanship, healthy lifestyle choices and producing positive citizens is a big step."

Other items included:

--all fall sports will now be able to begin practice on July 30 for 2011

--background checks were approved to be made by the NCHSAA on all those who register to officiate in the program

--live streaming of regular season games, including football and basketball, was approved

--some changes in wrestling weigh in and weight management procedures; recommend adjustment in weekly weigh in procedure; once matches begin, match weigh ins should be used and must be entered into OPC within 24 hours of match; mandated Friday weigh ins up to beginning of regular season competition; if no matches in a week, must have a weigh in during the week; if wrestler absent and does not weigh in at match, must have one during week

--baseball and softball now have the identical off season skill development rules as other sports, with the removal of "grandfather" clause for skill development for baseball and softball, so now all sports would have the same restrictions relative to out of season rules and regulations

--the NCHSAA will no longer sanction all-star games, as many other states have already gotten out of that business, but will continue to endorse the North Carolina Coaches Association events; information will be posted on web site relative for players, parents and coaches to consider when playing in an event of this nature; senior still must have completed eligibility in that sport, and play in no more than two games (football or basketball) during the school year

-- approved request to allow wrestling for 3A, 2A and 4A all to wrestle on Thursday of state individual wrestling championships

--approved addition to Handbook about sports in which the NCHSAA does not have a championship: "Even though such sports are not sanctioned by the NCHSAA, member schools should work, wherever possible, to adhere to the ideals and guidelines established by the NCHSAA for their member schools in sports which they do sanction. The need to promote sportsmanship, to protect instructional time, or the physiological and emotional needs of maturing teens should not disappear simply because it is not a sport sanctioned by the NCHSAA."

Finally Tired of Red Meat...at least for now...and a Sunday preview

It's Thursday morning and I've just finished the sports section for the Thursday print edition of the paper. Still, I can't get the images out of my head of Tuesday night's Big A Challenge down at Andy's Burgers in Locust.

I said this in the paper today but I reiterate it again: do not try this challenge unless you are fully prepared for it. There are ways to help stretch your stomach to do these challenges, but if you are not in great health, don't bother.

It's like some sports, really...food challenges are for younger people with appetites or those of us blessed with high metabolisms.

I can't even pass by the fast food places in town without my stomach starting to hurt for no apparent reason.

So no red meat for me for a while...luckily my beautiful wife and I have a vast menu of food we like to cook that are not beef-related.

- A small preview for Sunday's paper...we will have softball and baseball coverage, plus the latest Pfeiffer sports news and a new cycling event coming to downtown Albemarle this month as well.
